Although this was just a Community Shield match, Man United sent out an early warning to all their premier league rivals. Losing 2-0 at half time after conceding two goals (Lescott, Dzeko) in 5 minutes and barely making any chances themselves it looked like game over for Ferguson’s men.
After the break the manager introduced inexperienced defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for Vidic and Ferdinand and Tom Cleverley for the static Michael Carrick. This proved to be a master stroke as United were finally able to keep the hold of the ball and create chances. Newly promoted to the first team Tom Cleverley inspired the Red Devils with his energetic display and clever through balls. After an impressive pre-season he already attracted the attention of Capello and got his first England call up at senior level. He could be United’s new Paul Scholes, England fans should hope Man Utd don’t buy Sneijder and give the young midfielder time to develop. Along with Jack Wilshere, he could be the creative force for 2014 World Cup.
The only worrying signs for United were the mistakes by their new goalkeeper David de Gea. He is very vulnerable to shots from distance and this proved to be the case again last Sunday as he let in Edin Dzeko’s shot. He should count himself lucky, that Nani won the game for United in the last minute taking a lot of pressure off the young Spaniard.
